Our comprehensive auger piling services encompass steel-cased auger piling, open-bored auger piling, and sectional flight auger (SFA). You can find out more about each of them below.
What are the benefits of augered piling?
Augered piling involves drilling a deep hole into the ground using an auger: essentially a helical screw blade. As the auger rotates, it removes soil as it goes, creating a borehole. Once the desired depth is reached, concrete is pumped through the hollow stem of the auger as it is withdrawn, forming a pile.
This versatile process provides a number of useful advantages, including but not limited to:
- Reduced site disruption (due to the quiet and vibration-free operation)
- Cost-effective operation, since it requires less equipment and labour
- Fast installation, resulting in shorter project durations
- Minimal environmental impact with less noise, vibration, and disturbance to surrounding areas
These advantages make augered piling a popular choice for constructing stable foundations in a variety of construction projects, from residential buildings to large-scale infrastructure developments.
What is steel cased auger piling?
With steel-cased auger piling, the steel casing provides support to the surrounding soil and prevents collapse into the drilled hole, particularly in unstable or loose soil conditions. First, the steel casing is driven into the ground, followed by the auger drilling through the casing, removing soil and create a void. Concrete is then poured into the void, which forms the pile.
There’s an array of advantages associated with steel-cased auger piling, including enhanced stability and integrity of the drilled hole (which is what makes it so handy in unstable ground conditions), as well as the ability to support significant loads, reduced risk of soil collapse, and suitability for any project that requires deep foundations – such as high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial structures.
Notably, steel-cased auger piling can offer faster installation compared to some traditional piling techniques, which may contribute to shorter project durations and increased efficiency.
What is open bored auger piling?
Open bored auger piling differs from steel cased auger piling primarily in that there are no casings involved. Instead, open bored piles are made using a continuous auger (drill) which is inserted into the ground. The auger removes soil as it drills, and once the desired depth is reached, it’s removed from the pile, leaving an “open bore” – i.e. one without a casing.
Concrete is pumped through the hollow stem of the auger as it is withdrawn, forming a pile. This technique is most suitable for stable soil conditions, where the risk of collapse during drilling is minimal.
What’s involved in Sectional Flight Auger (SFA) piling?
Sectional Flight Auger piling is distinguished from other types of piling by its use of an auger with sectional flights (screw blades), all of which are assembled on-site to create a type of continuous flight. It works in broadly the same way as open bored auger piling – the auger is rotated into the ground, removing soil as it drills deeper. Once the desired depth is reached, concrete is pumped through the hollow stem of the auger as it is withdrawn, forming a pile.
SFA piling is valued for its ability to provide stable support for structures in a wide range of construction projects, from residential buildings to large-scale infrastructure developments. It’s typically used in situations where the ground conditions are suitable for installing piles without the need for a casing.
What’s more, SFA piling can often be carried out with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment, often making it a preferred choice in urban settings or areas with limited access.
