What is piling?
Piling is a common construction technique used to create strong foundations for buildings, especially in areas where the ground would otherwise be too weak to support new construction.
Piling essentially involves driving large columns deep into the ground to help form the foundation of the new building. These columns are typically made from wood, steel, or concrete, all chosen for their strength and stability. These columns essentially act to transfer the building’s ‘load’ (effectively, its weight) to a specific depth, helping to guarantee the stability and security of the final construction.
While piling is often folded into other general services in the construction sector, it’s a very highly skilled job that needs a high degree of care and expertise. How does piling work?
The piling process is fairly straightforward in principle, though the execution itself can often be quite involved. Here’s a quick roundup of the key stages of the process:
- Initial assessment: Our team will always begin by visiting the site in person to determine how many piles are required, and where they should be placed.
- Excavation: As soon as we’ve made the initial assessment, the ground is then ready to be excavated. You may well have your own groundworking company to handle this – but if not, then it’s always something we can do for you here at Vxcel.
- Installation: Once the ground has been properly prepared, we’ll then begin installing the steel piles into the ground at a foundational level, and place them in steel cages.
- Sign-off and concrete pouring: We’ll always make sure to get sign-off from Building Control on the day of the concrete pouring (we never proceed without it!). The moment the concrete has been poured, we can then start the short process of handing back the project to your builder.
The entire process will only take a few days, which means there’ll be little to no disruption of your building project.
